André Moisan

Principal bass clarinet and saxophone with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra
Associate professor at the Faculty of Music, University of Montreal
Buffet Crampon artist
Known for his command of the instrument, exceptional musicality, and clarity of sound, André Moisan is regarded as one of the most outstanding clarinetists of his generation. As a soloist and chamber musician, he has graced the music scene since 1977. His numerous international performances, notably at Carnegie Hall, the Royal Concertgebouw, and Radio-Berlin, have placed him among the foremost interpreters.
He has had the privilege of performing under renowned conductors, particularly with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, where he has held the position of principal saxophone and bass clarinet since May 1999. Since 1977, he has also served as an extra musician in various roles, including principal clarinet, piccolo clarinet, bass clarinet, basset horn, and saxophones. An accomplished conductor, host, and educator, he directed the Montreal Symphony Orchestra from 1998 to 2008 and the Quebec Symphony Orchestra on multiple occasions. He has been an associate professor at the Faculty of Music at the University of Montreal since 1999.
In addition to his numerous appearances on major international stages, he has contributed to around fifty albums across various genres in Canada and abroad. Beyond those recorded with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, he has also recorded 11 solo albums with ATMA, all acclaimed by international critics, including his latest album dedicated to Krzysztof Penderecki’s chamber music in collaboration with the Molinari Quartet, with whom he also recorded the Hebrew-inspired album Klezmer Dreams, also released by ATMA.
André Moisan has received numerous awards, including the Opus prize for conductor and has been nominated four times for the Opus Awards as a soloist, chamber musician, and conductor. Several of his creative and touring projects have received financial support from the Canada Council for the Arts, the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec, and the Longueuil Arts Council.
